Meet Rhodiola Rosea…The Potent Herb Rivaling Zoloft In Depression Treatment

Scientists have discovered a new herb to help those suffering from major depressive disorder (MDD). The study which examined 57 adults’ diagnoses with MDD is a trial to test the affects of he herb rhodiola rosea. Patients were given either the rhodiola rosea abstract, Zoloft, or a placebo.

MDD is a condition diagnosed after patients have had two or more major depressive episodes. A diagnosis could also follow if they have been in a depressed mode for more than two weeks or have lost significant interest in things which used to make them happy. Symptoms include unintentional weight loss or gain, insomnia or sleeping too much, fatigue, diminished ability to think or concentrate, and recurrent thoughts of death

Rhodiola rosea is a yellow flower from the arctic mountains of Eastern Siberia. Ancient healers
used it to treat infections, anemia and depression and it had similar uses in the Soviet Union’s military. After 12 weeks of testing, scientists found there was no difference between the rhodiola and Zoloft. Compared to the placebo, rhodiola patients had a 1.4 time greater chance of improving their conditions. Zoloft patients had a 1.9 chance.

This sunny herb may work wonders for those suffering from depression.

Researchers concluded rhodiola may be a much more beneficial and less riskier alternative treatment option for
patients with MDD. In the study, rhodiola only produced half of the side-effects Zoloft did. 63% of Zoloft patients have reported side-effects such as nausea and sexual dysfunction. Only 30% of the Rhodiola group reported these side-effects. This may provide alternatives therapy for patients whose bodies cannot tolerate conventional anti-depressants.

In this study, a 200mg dose was enough to help improve mood. Other research has shown it can be used to improve exercise endurance, relieve mental fatigue and improve a person’s capacity to concentrate. It may even be helpful in getting smokers to quit. Of course further research is needed, but initial findings are very promising.
