Holistic Health and Wellness is More Than Just A Good Diet

Any good talk therapist will tell you that focusing on a concept is the first step to achieving it. A car racer will tell you that you have to look at where you want the car to go, not what you need to avoid.

However, how often do we focus on our wellness? Instead, we go from day to day, not thinking about our health or body until it begins to ache, a joint twinges, or a headache starts. Then we try to fix the problem.

Wellness is a much wider concept, encompassing our physical, mental and spiritual sides. Each day we make decisions that affect the balance of our body and our wellbeing:

  • What we eat for lunch: Salad with low fat chicken and piece of fruit shortly after or a fast food sandwich and a candy bar later.
  • How we respond to getting up in the morning: by getting upset at the days tasks or trying to find the positive in every situation.
  • How we respond to feeling tired during the day: choosing a heart damaging energy drink or selecting a herbal tea blend.
  • How we act when we get home from work: collapsing on the couch, exhausted, or summoning up the will to stop at the gym or a yoga class on the way home, or walking around our neighborhood.

Each decision we make throughout each day creates our wellness.

What The Heck Are Enzymes?

Enzymes are called “the spark that makes life”. These power packed protein molecules play a vital role in every biochemical activity. They are essential for digesting food, perking up the brain, repairing every singe damaged tissue, and providing your cells with energy. The most successful alternative medicine treatments for cancer even include enzymes!  Necessary to facilitate every biochemical reaction in the body, enzymes are needed for life, with out them we simply don’t exist.

Unlike so many other diseases and conditions, acid reflux has a wide range of symptoms. It can be severe in one person and mild in another. There are many types of discomfort and pain associated with acid reflux. Suffers can simply experience mild burping while others will find it hard to breath and experience such acute pain they might feel they are experiencing heart problems.

We all get gas and there is no avoiding it if you’re a human being! It’s hard to tell if you’re showing signs of true acid reflux-where the stomach contents leak ‘backwards’ from the stomach into the esophagus-or if you’ve simply eaten too fast, or eaten something that is simply not agreeing with you. That’s what makes acid reflux such a hard condition for the average person to pin down. We all suffer from gas from time to time and burping is sometimes a normal function of life.

Treatments of acid reflux can take on many forms, but avoiding foods like alcohol, caffeine and spicy foods is always a good idea. Over-the-counter antacids may be used after meals and at bedtime, but relying on these for any length of time isn’t the best course of action.

As with any other disease or condition the best way to battle the problem is get to the root of it…and with acid reflux there can be many causes. This has become a very common condition these days-due to our diets, our stress levels, and our overall lifestyles. Acid reflux can be significantly controlled by the right approaches from an expert.

Smoking Not Only Destroys Your Lungs But Also Makes You Dumber

A study of over 20,000 military personnel in Israel found that the more you smoke the more your IQ decreases. And you only had to smoke one cigarette per day to start dropping your IQ.

The researchers, who had their study published in the February 2010 Addiction Journal, looked at 20,211 18-year-old men recruited into the Israeli armed forces. None of the participants had a history of mental health problems as these people are excluded from entering the military.

These findings suggest that smoking cigarettes may cause a reduction in brain function leading to lower IQ Scores. This makes sense because with the amount of health problems cigarettes cause why can’t it lower your IQ score? Now, let’s see if the cigarette industry refutes this study.

If you are a smoker and not ready to quit, use this tip. Begin taking a high potency fish oil product (preferably a liquid) daily to help nourish and regenerate brain cells, so you can buffer the brain damage from smoking.

If you are a smoker and looking to kick your habit and begin regenerating those brain cells you should look into my Banish! Stop Smoking Program. Utilizing the effective tools of HYPNOSIS and BIOFEEDBACK that the American Medical Association states is a viable option to help you stop smoking. New Jersey Trader Joe’s Locations – A Nutritionist Good Friend

Spacious, brightly lit and filled with more organic and health food choices then you will ever need, Trader Joe’s is fast competing with high-priced fresh food markets and other health food mega-stores in the northern NJ area. Boasting a cornucopia of nutrient packed fruits and anti-aging veggies, a wider variety of organic yogurt then the normal supermarket, a frozen food section not to be beat, and for gluten lovers, more choices than you could imagine. Every Trader Joe’s store offers customers good buys and plenty of variety.

There’s dried fruits and nuts, plenty of juices, cheeses, soups and even heart healthy chocolate stocking those eco-friendly shelves at Trader Joe’s stores. The store also carries its own delicious food line, usually at a much reduced price then their competitor’s products.

Even though I am a big fan of Trader Joe’s, especially the one next to my office in Paramus, NJ, you should be aware that not everything in the store is healthy. They have excellent healthy products that are hard to find with prices you can’t beat, but watch out because they also have food not to different than your regular supermarket that is sometimes overpriced.

The main point is to learn to read labels so you can take better control of your own health and your wallet.

Trader Joe’s has made a slow creep into the New Jersey area with not only stores in Paramus, but also with stores in Wayne, Westwood, Edgewater and Florham Park.

Soda: One of Worst Man Made Foods and Now it’s Linked to Pancreatic Cancer

Consuming as little as two soft drinks a week can nearly double a person’s risk of acquiring pancreatic cancer, a new study published in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research.

The lead author of the study, Noel T. Mueller reported: ”People who drank two or more soft drinks a week had an 87% increased risk — or nearly twice the risk — of pancreatic cancer compared to individuals consuming no soft drinks.”

In 2009 about 42,000 people in the U.S. were diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and the American Cancer Society estimates 35,240 deaths from this deadliest of cancers were expected. The pancreas creates hormones such as insulin to balance the body’s sugar in the blood and produces juices with enzymes to help break down fats and proteins in our foods.

As to be expected, the beverage industry took strong exception to the study, calling it flawed. They claim ‘other’ research has shown no association between soda consumption and pancreatic cancer. Sodas contain high amounts of refined sugars which cause over production of insulin and over time can put a large amount of stress and cause damage to the pancreas.

Might there indeed be a connection between this amazing amount of sugar in soda and the health of the pancreas? Most health and nutrition experts believe so, including myself.

One of the most important nutrition and health tips you could follow is avoid soda at all cost. The human body is around 70% water and that is what we need to drink to survive.

Men Can Reduce Their Chances of Lung Cancer by Eating Soy Foods!

Although factors such as exercise, and of course NOT smoking at all, greatly add to one’s chances of not acquiring lung cancer, a new study out of Japan shows that eating soy could also lower risks not previously realized.

Diet’s with soy intake have been all the rage as of late, for men especially, because of the possible preventive benefits for prostate cancer. But the new study, which included more then 36,000 Japanese men (and more then 40,000 women) indicating eating soy (combined with a healthy lifestyle of exercise and no smoking) could decrease a man’s risk for lung cancer.

Soy contains isoflavones, long thought to contain anti-cancer qualities for hormone related cancers like breast and the afore mentioned prostate. It is now believed that cells in the lung might have similar properties and therefore may respond well to isoflavones.

Time will of course be the best test for these findings, but for now men should consider the further possible benefits from a healthy lifestyle, no smoking and a good diet containing some soy foods.

Soy foods can be part of a healthy diet when consumed in small to moderate quantities and from the sources of miso, tempeh, soy beans and small amounts of tofu because they do not contain high amounts of the unhealthy components of soy.

In most cases the public should avoid processed soy foods such as soy milk, cheeses, cookies, ice creams, etc and you should never ever give a baby soy formula or soy milk.

Sometimes soy protein and soy isoflavones may be used therapeutically to balance hormones, but this should be taken under the supervision of a trained professional.

New Jersey Nutritionist

New Jersey is arguably one of the busiest areas of the country to live and work.  I should know as I am a practicing nutritionist in the heart of Bergen County, New Jersey. Residing on the east coast, specifically here in New Jersey, adults and children alike are at the mercy of hectic daily lives. We rarely get the sleep we need, we are under enormous stress from our jobs, ever increasing social lives and more of our meals taken on a catch-as-catch basis…take-out food has never been more popular. Our lifestyle, this whirlwind of stressors and our poor nutrition is a perfect breeding ground for ill health and chronic ailments. Even when we think we are eating correctly, even when we are proactive with our diets and educating ourselves to the correct type of supplements we need, we are still at the mercy of so much information coming at us at a dizzying pace simply because we live here, in New Jersey, one of the busiest areas of the country.

The problems above are not exclusive to us in New Jersey, the typical poor American diet exists in all parts of the country, you think there’s isn’t a McDonalds in Iowa? Still, here we have a “Catch-22”, type of dilemma; in an area as populated as New Jersey there are tons of nutritionists available to treat you as well as there is a glut of health food stores and fresh markets for you to shop in. But again without the proper education from the right doctor and knowing what to shop for, you’ll not only be wasting your time and money, you could be putting your health at risk in the long term with an inadequate nutritionist.

The unending problems that occur when we are not eating correctly or not getting enough of the right nutrients can lead to health problems we might not even be able to detect. Too many of us simply ‘deal with’ chronic poor nutrition ailments like; IBS, constipation and acid reflux (terms all us have heard too often) and live our lives dealing with these problems as if this is just the way it was meant to be. New Jersey folks are too tough to let a few stomach issues slow us down, right? Well, taking the time to address your nutrition, even when you feel your needs are slight, will not only bring you better health but make you more productive.

Seeing a nutritionist is the very best money and time you can spend on your health. In fact, once your eating habits, supplement protocol and possible chronic health issues are addressed you might not need your regular doctor as much. A functioning body, bolstered by good scientifically sound nutrition from an expert nutritionist is truly your best defense against our crazy New Jersey lifestyles.

Depression: An overview

A great amount of American citizens are waylaid by depression. Millions upon millions of dollars are spent on an ever-popular drug culture to battle the blues, and therapists haven’t ever been busier. Depression is big business in our modern culture:

  • Approx 17 million Americans suffer from clinically treated depression
  • Over 28 million U.S. citizens take antidepressant drugs or anxiety meds
  • There are simple organic factors that can lead to depression; bad nutrition, excess of drugs, alcohol and caffeine, hormonal changes, etc.
  • Depression can be a first manifestation of thyroid disease
  • Hypoglycemia can cause depression

While there is no one cure for depression, there are many approaches that have shown results:

  • Better nutrition and a proactive supplement routine can help an individual fight or at least manage there blues; deficiency can alter brain function.
  • Increased physical activity has been shown to quell bouts of the blues.
  • Deficiencies in omega-3 (fish) oils has been linked to depression
  • Talk therapy from various disciplines might aid in relief.

The main factor to consider is that there are as many different reasons why a person might become depressed as there are ways to try and counter that depression.
