Detoxification-What It Is and What Are The Benefits

For want of a better term, most of us would benefit greatly from a ‘clean slate’. It’s so much easier to implement good nutrition and reap the benefits from a healthy lifestyle, if one first acknowledges then alleviates the various ‘toxins’ we accumulate through our interaction with the modern world.

We are exposed to a great number of toxins through pollution in our air and water, not to mention the chemicals in our food supply. Eliminating this ‘glunk’ from our body, we can start to benefit from good health. Many detoxification experts believe that detoxification helps clear wastes and dead cells to revitalize the body’s natural functions and healing capacities.

What is detoxification?

Detoxification is the process of clearing toxins from the body through dietary, supplements and lifestyle changes. Avoiding the intake of the ‘bad stuff’; chemicals, poor nutrition, etc. and improving elimination of these harmful substances is the key to the process.

Simple measures such as increasing your water intake, eating more fiber-rich foods such as fruits and vegetables, even fasting for a prescribed finite period can aid in the natural detoxification process. There are also a litany of detoxification diets and products to aid you in the process.

As been previously mentioned, even our best intentions for good health can be waylaid if we don’t start from a good place. If one suffers from toxicity (and many times we don’t even know how full up of toxins we are) than anything we try, from a better diet to supplements to even exercising, will be hampered because we are hampered by pre-existing health impairments. Detoxification can work by giving you a clear level on which to begin a new health regimen of good eating, stress free interactions and exercise, almost as if you are starting down a new road with all your toxins eliminated.

There are numerous types of detoxification therapies depending on what your goal is.  A natural health practitioner should be consulted before starting any type of detoxification program. Certain supplements and detoxification can be contra indicated in people taking certain medications or certain health conditions.
