When the holidays roll around, so do the drinks! With certain holidays centered around drinking festivities fast approaching such as St. Patrick’s Day and Cinco de Mayo, you may find yourself invited to share a round with your nearest and dearest…however, you should know that many of those drinks contain a great deal more sugar than one would like to (or should) ingest. Here is a list of alternative drinks with less sugar to enjoy throughout the year.
- A Gimlet is made from hard alcohol, containing no sugar. Made with 2.5 oz. of vodka, rum, tequila, whiskey or gin, half-ounce of fresh lime juice, and a half ounce of simple syrup, which keeps the sugar at about 12 grams total.
- A Moscow Mule combines vodka, lime and can have sugar free ginger beer or diet ginger ale. Swap out the spirit with bourbon, gin or tequila.
- Paloma has no sugar to begin with, but it often gets paired with high sugar mixers. Mix with soda water or grapefruit juice.
- A Vodka soda splash can be made with club soda, which keeps it sugar free. To add sweetness, use 100% cranberry juice and garnish with lime. Excellent accompaniment for the cranberry-laden soda bread one typically enjoys around St. Patty’s Day!
- Rum and Coke can be made with Diet Coke. Add some lime juice for a bit of a citrus twist and you’ve got a Cinco de Mayo cocktail that will whisk you away without spamming you with sugar.
- Bloody Mary can be made with just vodka, tomato juice, Worcester, hot sauce and spices. Tomatoes are also full of lycopene which is a wonderful antioxidant.
Of course, it goes without saying that you should always drink responsibly and always be mindful of any potential contraindications with medications or supplements you may be taking. Other than that, enjoy!
