According to a new report it’s been discovered that many children under the age of 6 are using more toothpaste than they should. Fluoride in toothpaste is great for preventing gum disease, decay and cavities, but too much can lead to a condition called dental fluorosis.

Fluorosis is a common side effect of too much fluoride exposure.
Fluorosis is the discoloration of teeth which can be harmful in young children who do not have a fully developed enamel. And too much fluoride is bad for people of all ages as high levels can damage your stomach and kidney function.
For small children under 3 the toothpaste size should be only a smear on the brush and brushing should start as soon as the first tooth comes out of the gumline. Children ages 3 to 6 should use a pea size amount of toothpaste. Dentists recommend that parents help their kids when they first start brushing their teeth to make sure they develop healthy habits including brushing 2 times per day and removing all the buildup on their teeth.
