A new study revealed that men who wear boxers are probably more fertile than those who wear briefs or jockeys.
A report published in Human Reproduction states that in couples being treated for infertility, if the man wore tight fitting underwear he had lower sperm counts.
Although the amounts were not that significant it is suggested that if a couple is trying to get pregnant the male should start wearing loose underwear at least 3 months ahead of time since, although sperm are always being produced, it takes about 3 months for the sperm to become mature.
We usually think of fertility as a female issue but, in fact, it is a team effort and, in many cases, it is the man’s problem. During this research where 646 men were part of couples looking for fertility treatment, it was found the men who wore boxers had a 25% higher amount of sperm as well as 17% higher sperm count than those who did not wear boxers.
The reason why briefs make a difference is that they keep the testes close to the body and, as we know, sperm is very sensitive to temperature. That is the reason they reside outside the abdominal cavity. When wearing tighter underwear the temperature is higher. Although we are glad to know that the type of underwear does not affect the sperms’ structure or their capacity to swim forward.
On the other hand, if a man is wearing tighter underwear in a cooler temperature room, he does not need to worry. But if you are exercising and wearing tight shorts, you are exposing your testicles to heat.
Heat seems to be the one consistent cause that affects the production of sperm. That is the reason you see different results during different times of the year and why it is not recommended for men to go into jacuzzis.
In short, if you are a man trying to have a baby, always try everything to make it easier including wearing loose-fitting underwear.
