Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a psychological therapy that helps treat mental and/or emotional problems. EMDR therapy has helped people overcome numerous emotional problems such as post-traumatic stress, trauma, anxiety, panic, and disturbing memories.
EMDR is considered cutting-edge therapy for treating emotional problems due to its simplicity and quick and lasting results. EMDR is a natural way of healing emotional problems that are difficult and time-consuming to treat and many times requiring pharmacological interventions.
Meta-analysis of research studies has shown EMDR to be the most effective and quickest therapy for treating Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Research has also shown EMDR is most successful when used in conjunction with traditional therapies in treating emotional conditions/disorders.
How does EMDR work?
EMDR uses bilateral stimulation, either right and left eye movement or tactile stimulation, to activate the brain to release negative or traumatic emotional experiences trapped in the part of the brain responsible for memory storage. The goal of EMDR therapy is to help people heal from negative or traumatic experiences so they can return to leading a peaceful life.
An EMDR therapist works with the client to help remove negative or traumatic experiences from the client’s memory. First, the EMDR therapist asks the client to revisit the traumatic or negative experience. The EMDR therapist then holds his/her fingers close to the client’s face and moves them back and forth like a windshield wiper. The client tracks the therapist’s hand movements while intensely focusing on the negative or traumatic memory recalling all negative thoughts and feelings associated with the negative or traumatic experience. The more intensely the client focuses on the negative or traumatic memory, the easier it becomes for the memory to come up to life. As the memory is brought to life, vibrant images of the memory arise. The images are processed by the eye movements, which leads to the release of all painful feelings and achieving a more peaceful state of mind.
