Researchers are examining zinc deficiencies as a cause for the underlying pathology of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and other conditions associated with it. They say this is because of the role zinc plays in the brain-gut axis, the immune system, and gastrointestinal barrier integrity. IBS affects 12% of the population.
Information on the quality of current treatments is low, though what is known is IBS patients condition tend to worsen over time. Current data shows those with IBS have significantly higher ratios of copper to zinc (1.70 vs 1.55, P =.048) and were more likely to have ratios (OR, 1.79; 95% CI, 1.02-3.13). Scientist say this would suggest a deficiency in zinc, possibly because patients avoid milk.
The largest source of zinc in a person’s diet is milk. IBS patients tend to avoid certain food and drinks, such as milk because they can cause bad reaction. Scientists are recommending exploring supplements of zinc to help improve the gut health of patients.
