Colitis suffers may benefit with a natural remedy by consuming a fermented milk product containing beneficial bacteria, one in a long line of what are considered probiotic foods.
Colitis is a disease, where the lining of the intestine becomes severely inflamed. Symptoms include frequent and loose stools, abdominal cramping and pain, blood and mucus in the stool. Avoiding sugary foods such as sodas and cookies can sometimes help improve a person’s condition.
But in a recent study of two groups of adult colitis suffers, a fermented milk product or a probiotic was introduced into one group along with their usual medication. Colitis symptoms rose in 27% of the group taking the fermented milk product, compared with 90% of those who only took the prescription medications!
People with colitis often have elevated amounts of a bacterium in their stool called Bacteroides vulgatus. In the study sighted above, the number of Bacteroides organisms was significantly reduced following treatment with the fermented milk, probiotic product.
Although at this time it is unknown just how beneficial bacteria might improve colitis, ‘normalizing’ your intestinal microflora through the ingestion of probiotics might be the first step in management of colitis. Probiotics are a wonderful natural remedy with no side-effects.
