Research from Marshall University’s Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine has shown walnuts may be a powerful tool in suppressing breast cancer. Previous studies have shown walnuts to slow breast cancer growth and reduce the risk of breast cancer in mice. Based on this research, the team began to wonder if walnuts could alter gene expressions in breast cancer of women, causing decreased breast cancer growth.
The study looked at women with breast cancer and placed them into two groups; one which would consume walnuts and one group which would not. The group which did not would serve as the control. The group which did consume walnuts consumed two ounces of walnuts per day following the biopsy to follow-up surgery.
The results were gathered through RNA sequencing. In the results, researchers found the 456 identified genes had significantly changed their expression in the tumor, attributable to the walnuts. The results suggest consuming just two ounces of walnuts a day for roughly two weeks can cause significant and positive changes in the way cancer causing genes express themselves in women with breast cancer.
