Food Allergies & Food
Intolerance and Sensitivities
What are food allergies?
Food allergies are your body’s immune system response to an offending food. When you ingest food and the body thinks an ingredient in that food is harmful your body’s natural immune system defense response (antibodies) come to fight it. Allergeric symptoms develop when the food allergy antibodies are battling the offending food. The most common food allergies in modern day American society are wheat, dairy, peanuts, tree nuts (such as walnuts, pecans and almonds), fish, shellfish, milk, eggs, and soy products.
What is a food intolerance and sensitivity?
Food intolerances occur when your digestive system responds to the allergin rather than your immune system. It occurs when something in your food irritates your digestive system, or when you are unable to properly digest or breakdown the food.
You probably have experienced a food intolerance at some point in your life. I’m sure you have heard or might have even suffered from lactose intolerance from dairy, the most common food intolerance in the United States today.
Food allergy, intolerance and sensitivity testing
There are different types of food allergies, intolerances and sensitivities. Most doctors do a standard IgE test that only detects around 5% of foods that may be causing a problem. This is why consultation with a health professional who is skilled at detecting which foods cause you problems is very important.
