Children’s Vegetable Intake Linked to Popeye Cartoons

Mahidol University researchers in Bangkok found the type and amount of vegetables children consumed improved after they participated in a program using videos and role models to promote healthy food.

Professor Chutima Sirikulchayanonta lead researcher said: “We got the children planting vegetable seeds, taking part in fruit and vegetable tasting parties, cooking vegetable soup, and watching Popeye cartoons. Each parent received a letter with tips on encouraging children to eat fruit and vegetables, and teachers sat with children at lunch to role model healthy eating.”

Professor Sirikulchayanonta and the other researchers found that vegetable intake went up 100% and the kinds of vegetables the children consumed increased from two to four servings. Parents also stated their children talked about vegetables more often and were proud they had eaten them in their school lunch.

She stated there were no changes in the types of fruit eaten by the kids, but this was because they were already consuming more fruit than vegetables at the start of the research study.

Studies have concluded that food habits and eating patterns developed in early childhood continue into later childhood and adulthood. Professor Sirikulchayanonta said focusing on healthy food choices at an early age can have a major impact on the future health of adults.

The study also highlights that:

  • Sitting next to children and eating the same foods as them makes children feel special
  • Involving children in food preparation activities, like pouring, measuring and stirring helps children learn the names and colors of foods.

There are more fungal infections in today’s society than ever before. There are a bunch of reasons for this. With today’s healthcare people are living longer and older folks are more prone to have weaker immune systems which increases the risk factor for fungal infections.

Also, the overuse of antibiotics has added to the growing infection rate. Fungal infections can occur after taking antibiotics, which kills off the beneficial bacteria that normally suppress fungus.

The most common organism that causes fungal infections is the notorious Candida. Candida is found in the mouth, human digestive tract and genital region. Under normal conditions, Candida is controlled by beneficial bacteria. However, if the bacteria/fungus ratio is off balance, which commonly occurs when taking antibiotics, or if the immune system is weak, an overgrowth of Candida happens to lead to a fungal infection.

Candida overgrowth is supported by certain pH levels and the over consumption of sugar. The right conditions for a Candida infection are high sugar diet and a compromised immune system. Candida infections can also be spread to people with weak immune systems, who are in a hospital. In hospitals the fungus is commonly found on the hands of caregivers and catheters, which can allow an infection to take hold.

Below are areas that can be affected by Candida infections:

Skin. Candida infections of the skin generally are between the toes, fingers, around the anus and on the penis. A fungal infection of the skin usually happens at the site of an abrasion or where skin is moist for long periods of time. Nails that are infected can turn yellow or white and separate from the skin around it.

Genitals. The most common infections are vulvae vaginal. Majority of women experience a vaginal Candida infection at some point in their life.

The symptoms of a vulvovaginal infection are itchiness, burning or irritation. Even though Candida albicans is one of the most common reasons for vulvovaginal infections it is also caused by bacteria. Other symptoms can include redness of the vulva and inner thighs, painful urination or intercourse. Candida infections happen most often when there are PH changes. This can occur as a result of hormonal fluctuations, such as prior to and after menstruation, during perimenopause and menopause.

Mouth and throat. Oral Candidiasis, or more commonly known as thrush, occurs in the mouth. It looks like white areas or patches on the tongue, lips, inner cheeks, or roof of the mouth. Most cases of oral Candida occur in neonates and people with weak immune systems, especially people infected with HIV or people undergoing chemotherapy for cancer.

Systemic infection. Under usual circumstances, small amounts of Candida can be found in the gut and in different locations within the body. People who have a decreased immune system can have Candida infections that occur throughout the body. This condition is known as systemic or deep tissue Candidiasis.  Candida infections should be taken seriously with immediate treatment.

Systemic Candida infections usually occurs in people with one or more of the following: high sugar diets, corticosteroids, antibiotics, skin damage, decreased immune system, organ transplantation, or serious illness requiring hospitalization in an intensive-care unit.

If candidiasis is associated with diabetes or other medical conditions, the root problem must be addressed in order to discourage Candida/yeast over growth. Invasive Candida (deep candidiasis) can affect major organs, such as the kidneys, digestive system, spleen, lungs, liver, eyes, heart or brain.

Diagnosis and Conventional Treatment of Candida/Yeast Infections

Diagnosis of a Candida infection can often be accomplished by the presence of symptoms. To be certain of the diagnosis, samples of the fungus have to be identified under a microscope. Also, biopsy samples can be taken from deeper lesions. Candida antibody levels in the blood can also be tested and measured. There are also stool tests that measure the amount of Candida in your digestive system.

When a candida infection has been determined, its treatment plan depends on where in the body it is located. If the infection is severe medication may be needed along with hospitalization, but many times a good nutritional approach with supplements is effective.

Nutritional, Diet and Natural Approaches to Healthy Intestinal Bacteria

People with chronic Candida/yeast infections or anyone at a higher risk for fungal infections, should consider supplementing their diets with nutrients and foods that discourage Candida overgrowth. One area that must be addressed is to maintain a good healthy amount of beneficial bacteria in the gut.

Probiotics and yogurt. Multiple studies have demonstrated that daily intake of yogurt enriched with live probiotics, such as Lactobacillus acidophilus can increase levels of beneficial (friendly) bacteria in the vagina and gut. Many studies have demonstrated that a cup of yogurt eaten daily drastically reduces the risk of Candida infections and colonization. This natural remedy or nutritional treatment is usually well tolerated, except with people with specific milk allergies. In addition supplemental probiotics should be added to the diet to replenish the beneficial bacteria. This product should be chosen by a qualified health professional which is an area I often assist many of my clients with.

In addition to the above recommendations, dietary changes should be made. A low sugar and low yeast diet should be implemented. Candida can feed and grow from a high sugar and high yeast diet. It is best to starve the fungal infection by not providing it with any food.

Other Nutrients, Natural Remedies and Treatments that Battle Candida/Fungal Infections

Lots of nutrients can reduce the risk of fungal infections by attacking the microbes directly or boosting the immune system. These include the following list, but there are many other nutrients and herbs that can kill candida:

Goldenseal. The main Candida killing ingredient of goldenseal is called berberine. Its therapeutic actions are inhibiting and killing certain organisms, including Candida.

Nine other antimicrobial properties have been discovered in goldenseal, which contribute to its antimicrobial properties.

Volatile oils from oregano, thyme, peppermint, tea tree, and rosemary have all shown antifungal actions. The volatile oils are absorbed quickly and are associated with  heartburn. They have to be taken in coated capsules, so they don’t breakdown in the stomach but instead are transferred to the small and large intestine. These capsules are known as enteric coating.

Garlic. Garlic has a bunch of antiandida properties and has demonstrated to stop the growth of Candida. Additional studies have shown that garlic extracts begin their anticandida effect within one hour of ingestion.

Lifestyle, Diet, and Nutrition Recommendation to Reduce Candida Infections

People who deal with yeast infections may want to make lifestyle changes that minimize the risk and severity of yeast infections.

The following changes can be effective:

  • Reducing or eliminating refined sugar
  • Eliminating foods that have a high yeast content
  • Eating 6-8 oz of yogurt everyday to restore normal flora in the digestive tract
  • Getting ample sleep for optimal immune function

A study performed at the University of California, Los Angeles found tumor cells fed both glucose and fructose used the two sugars in two different ways,

Pancreatic tumor cells use fructose to grow and multiply within the body, U.S. researchers said that the challenges the common wisdom that all sugars are the same.

They said the findings which are published in the Journal of Cancer Research, may  explain other research that has linked fructose consumption with pancreatic cancer. Pancreatic cancer is one of the deadliest types with a low 5 year survival rate.

Dr. Anthony Heaney of UCLA’s Johnson Cancer Center and colleagues wrote. “These results show that cancer cells can easily metabolize fructose to increase proliferation,”

“This has a major significance for people suffering from cancer who are given dietary refined fructose consumption, and indicates that steps should be taken to reduce refined fructose intake or inhibit fructose-mediated actions that may disrupt cancer growth.”

The United States takes in excessive amounts of fructose, mainly in high fructose corn syrup, a mix of fructose and glucose that is used in soft drinks. It is also added to breads and a range of other foods.

Health experts, politicians, and the food industry have debated whether high fructose corn syrup and other ingredients have been helping to make Americans fatter and unhealthy.

Too much sugar of any kind not only causes weight gain, but is also a key factor in diabetes, heart disease and stroke. This is according to the American Heart Association (AHA).

Several states, including California and New York, have started a tax on sweetened soft drinks to offset the cost of treating obesity-related diseases such as heart disease, cancer and diabetes.

The American Beverage Association, whose members include Coca-Cola and Pepsi have strongly, and successfully, opposed efforts to tax soda.

The food industry has also argued that sugar is sugar.

Dr. Heaney stated his team found otherwise. They grew pancreatic cancer cells in lab dishes and gave them both glucose and fructose.

Tumor cells thrive on sugar, but they used the fructose to grow and multiply. “Importantly, fructose and glucose metabolism are quite different,” Heaney’s team wrote.

Heaney said in a statement.”I think this paper has a lot of public health implications. Hopefully, at the federal level there will be some effort to step back on the amount of high fructose corn syrup in our diets.”

Now the team and the pharmaceutical industry hopes to develop a drug that might stop tumor cells from making use of fructose.

In 2004, the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that U.S. consumption of high fructose corn syrup went up 1,000 percent between 1970 and 1990.

What Exactly is Eczema?

Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, is an inflammation of the skin that is usually itchy and very dry. The condition is frequently caused by some form of an allergy, which may include foods or inhalants.

Description of Eczema

Atopic dermatitis or eczema is sometimes described as the itch that rashes.  The scratching of the inflamed areas may very well start the rash in some people. The skin of those affected by eczema is extremely dry, because of excessive loss of moisture. Severe situations of it can cause the affected areas to form thick plaques (patches of overgrown skin that rises), develop serous (watery) exudates, or sometimes become infected.

These areas of the body that are affected by eczema or atopic dermatitis usually vary with age. Children who are five years old or younger are more likely to have eczema, but it can occur at any age. It can be mild and come and go, or chronic. Toddlers commonly experience it on their face and other areas of the head. Their stomach, arms and legs may also become involved. Older children commonly have the worst parts on their inner wrists and elbows, backs of knees, and ankles.

What Causes Eczema And What Are The Symptoms

Genetics play a role in who will get eczema or other allergies. There is approximately a 50–80% chance that a child of two parents with allergies will also develop some form of eczema. The genetic predisposition of the individual, combined with early exposure to strong antigens, will determine whether the person will develop allergies. Aside from a predisposition to eczema, increased use of soapy detergents and baby wipes is probably responsible for higher incidence of childhood eczema as well as allergies to food, nutritional deficiencies, bowel permeability and toxins.

The usual sign of eczema is an itchy, red rash. The persons age determines what regions are most likely affected but exceptions do occur.

 

How to Diagnose Eczema

To this date, no laboratory test can reliably diagnose eczema, although some people will register positive to tests designed to diagnose allergies. These include tests like skin injections, patch or scratch tests. There is a blood test available that measures levels of antibodies (immune system cells) to suspected allergies. Diagnosis is usually made by the location or appearance of the rash.

Natural & Alternative Treatments For Eczema

The basis of natural and alternative treatments for eczema are keeping the skin clean, moist, avoiding irritants and known allergens. If the skin becomes infected further more aggressive actions are needed.

Conventional thoughts have been that minimal bathing of the person with eczema is ideal. The belief was that bathing would break down the natural oil on the surface of the skin and cause more drying. Research in the last few years has shown that soaks are hydrating to the dry skin that eczema produces.  There are many different types of soaks and some can make your particular situation worse.  I have helped many people with eczema if you are in need of assistance feel free to call me.

Environmental factors can give some relief for many people with eczema. Animal dander and cigarette smoke are triggers. Keeping these out of the home, clothing and bedding should be 100% soft cotton, and laundered in a natural detergent with no perfumes.

Clothes should be loose fit to prevent inflammation from rubbing. Wash the bedding in hot water that will help to kill any dust mites. Running laundry through a double rinse cycle will help to remove any vestiges of detergent. Avoid the use of fabric softener or dryer sheets as these are frequently scented and may be an inflammatory. Drying bedding or clothes outdoors should be avoided, because potential allergens are likely to cling to them. Mattresses and pillowcase can be covered by special casings that microscopic dust mites can’t infest. Under normal conditions mites cause no problem, but they can be a major trigger for the person with asthma or eczema.

Temperature extremes can make eczema worse, so heating and cooling should be used when appropriate and adding humidity when needed. People with eczema tend to have an abnormal regulation of body temperature, and sometimes feel warmer or colder than other people. Sweating will frequently irritate eczema. Room temperature should be adjusted so the person is comfortable. Air conditioning is the best option for cooling the home. Air conditioning should be used instead of open windows and also to cool the car. Electrostatic filters and vent covers can be used to remove irritants from the air that are in the house. These should be frequently changed or cleaned.

In the person’s room, items that collect dust such as carpeting, curtains and stuffed animals are best to avoid. Cleaning the room for dust should be done regularly when the  person is not in the room. HEPA filter units and vacuums with built-in HEPA filters remove a very high percentage of pollen and dust from the environment.

Simple mechanical measures will reduce the amount of scratching caused by eczema. Keep fingernails short and use a nail file which will produce a smoother nail edge. It is particularly difficult to keep children with eczema from scratching, but using clothing with maximum skin coverage will help to protect the skin. Socks or mittens can be used to cover the hands at night to reduce the effects of scratching.

In addition to the skin care and environmental measures to relieve eczema, there are some complementary therapies that may prove helpful.

Dietary Modification

Eczema can be triggered by allergies. Majority of children with eczema have food allergies, according to research. A holistic, alternative medicine doctor should be consulted to determine whether allergies are an issue. Once the trigger for the allergy has been identified, avoidance of the allergen can lead to significant improvement.

However, common food allergens (e.g., cows’ milk, egg, wheat, soy, and nuts) are sometimes the cause of eczema in adults. A diversity of substances have been shown to trigger eczema reactions in sensitive individuals.  Eliminating these substances has similarly been shown to improve eczema.

Meditation

Meditation instructors help people with eczema to achieve and maintain a relaxed state of positive concentration. This can be done individually with proper training.  Even ten minutes of practice per day can produce beneficial results for eczema Studies have shown eczema to be one of the conditions that is improved by this technique.

Herbal therapy

Herbal therapies can be useful for skin conditions. Among the herbs most often recommended are:

  • Calendula (Calendula officinalis) ointment, for anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties.
  • Chickweed (Stellaria media) ointment, to soothe itching.
  • Evening  Primrose Oil (Oenograceae) topically to relieve itching, and internally to supplement fatty acids.

Nutritional Supplements For Eczema

There are several nutrients and natural treatments that can prove helpful for treating eczema. Oral doses of evening primrose oil which contains gammalinolenic acid have been shown to significantly reduce itching. Fish oil has also been shown to improve eczema, at an approximate dose of 1.8 g per day. Vitamin C, as ester-c, can affect both skin healing and inflammation. Vitamin E is very useful, with many studies supporting it.

Expected Results

There is no known cure for eczema, although most people will experience significant improvement with diet, nutrition and natural treatments. As many as 75% of those who have eczema in childhood will go on to have other allergenic problems such as asthma, food allergies, and hay fever. Daily care of the skin and avoiding known triggers will control majority of eczema cases.

Prevention of Eczema

One very important thing a mother can do to for her child to avoid getting eczema, is to breastfeed. It is optimal for the baby to have breast milk for at least six months, especially when there is a family history of eczema or other allergies. If breastfeeding is not an option, a hypoallergenic formula (non soy) should be used if there is a family history of allergies. Heart Disease Prevention and Good Quality Protein

On Aug. 18, 2010 a study reported in the Journal of the American Heart Association found that females who ate more protein-rich foods(nuts, seeds, fish, beans) in place of red meat had a drastically lower risk of developing heart disease.

When participants consumed more red meat and processed red meat along with high-fat dairy foods increased their risk of heart disease. Women who ate two servings (3 to 4 ounces) per day of red meat compared to those who had half a serving (2 ounces) per day had a 30 percent increased risk of developing coronary heart disease.

Adam M. Bernstein, M.D., Sc.D  at the Harvard School of Public Health stated “This study showed that making substitutes for red meat or minimizing the amount of red meat in the diet has important health benefits.”

These study results also showed that consuming more servings of poultry, fish and nuts significantly decreased the risk of coronary heart disease.

Below are some finding from the study:

  • 13 percent lower risk with one serving each day of low-fat dairy products
  • 19 percent lower risk with one serving each day of poultry
  • 24 percent lower risk with one serving each day of fish
  • 30 percent lower risk with one serving each day of nuts

“There are good protein-rich sources that do not involve red meat such as nuts, fish seeds, beans, etc.” Bernstein was quoted as saying. “You don’t need to have hot dogs, bologna, hamburger or pastrami, which are all  processed meats.”

This study participants were 84,136 women, 30 to 55 years old, in the Nurses’ Health Study over 26 years, from 1980 to 2006.

The primary findings in the study were non-fatal heart attacks and fatal coronary heart disease, from 1980 up to June 1, 2006. During this period 2,210 non-fatal heart attacks and 952 deaths occurred from coronary heart disease. The study has an important component from other research in the field because the analysis has a 26-year follow-up.

Bernstein said, “Although this study had only women participants, the overall knowledge of risk factors for heart disease point to the findings are likely to apply to men.”

If reducing your risk of heart disease is a goal, you should consider replacing red meat with other protein-rich foods, including fish, low-fat dairy products, beans and nuts.

Nutrition, Diet, Natural Treatments And Remedies For Yeast Infections

Many nutritious foods that provide good health unfortunately encourage growth of a fungus that causes yeast infections, known as candidiasis albicans (candida). If you get yeast infections or seem to get them often, you should reduce and better yet avoid the foods that feed candida. It is very important to recognize which foods in your diet can fight yeast infections.

What Foods In Your Diet Favor The Growth Of Yeast Infections?

Interesting enough, many of the good foods on the kitchen shelf are the ones to limit or avoid. Every person lives with a certain amount of the fungus (candida) candidiasis albicans in their body. This candida lives in the mouth, the skin, the intestines and the vagina. It usually lives in small, harmless colonies. Specific events and items, including some foods, can encourage these harmless candidiasis colonies to grow quickly. The overgrowths make the unpleasant and even harmful conditions that we call yeast infections.

Think about the foods that make up many of our lunch. Let’s say a peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwich, a glass of milk, and a red apple. The example is not intended to discourage one from eating these good foods. What Foods In Your Diet Can Encourage Yeast Overgrowth?

Candidiasis albicans is a fungus that usually thrives under the same conditions and environment that yeast does. Just as yeast grows in the presence of sugar, candidiasis flourishes when plenty of sugar is accessible. Honey, maple syrup, and sugar are the favorites of this common fungus. Fruits and fruit juices often contain large amounts of sugar. For these reasons, anyone on an anti-candida diet and using natural treatments should limit fruit or fruit juice.

Non-Sweet Sugary Foods In The Diet

There are some foods we wouldn’t normally think of as being sugary but do contain a form of sugar. The yeast in bread, for instance, relies on a form of sugar. Pizza has a sugary substance, because the flour contains a form of sugar. The toppings and sauce can contain sugar-based ingredients or a form of corn sweetener (high fructose corn syrup). You can detect sugar in a non-sweet food item by reading the package label. The package label tells how much sugar can be found in each serving.

Yeast Foods In The Diet

Beverages and foods that contain yeast or are made with the assistance of yeast are especially loved by candidiasis. This builds of big list of unwelcome foods. All the many food products that require fermentation, such as bean curd, cheese, yeast breads and vinegar are included. Beer, wine, and alcoholic drinks are important on this list.

Dairy Foods And The Anti-Candida Diet

A category of healthy foods in our diet that encourage the growth of candidiasis is dairy.  Dairy products are contaminated with mold. Specifically cheese and yogurt, because they are made by the process of fermentation, these foods should be eliminated when you are cleansing your body of candida over growth.

Dried Fruits And Peanuts In Your Diet

Most nuts are actually helpful on an antifungal (candidiasis) diet. It is only peanuts and their products that need to be avoided. It is, because most of the peanuts have an aflatoxin (mold) that grows on them. Fine for a healthy person but with candida it is best to avoid them.

What Foods In Our Diet And Natural Treatments Actually Discourage The Candidiasis Infection?

Garlic: Add it to you diet.

Garlic is our best friend when fighting candida. People who have frequent yeast infections make a habit of eating one to three garlic cloves per day. Garlic therapeutic actions work very effectively against candidiasis.

Vegetables: Consume more in your diet

Fresh vegetables are another great standby when building an anti-candida diet and natural treatment approach. Orange and yellow vegetables are excellent at boosting the immune system. The only food that you may want to avoid on an anti-candida diet is mushrooms.

Fatty Acids: Sardines and salmon make great additions to your diet.

Foods that have essential fatty acids are beneficial in preventing and treating yeast infections, for example, flaxseed and fatty fish.

Herbs

Certain herbs discourage an overgrowth of candidiasis. Pau d’Arco is generally not considered part of an anti-candida diet, but it can be made into a potent tea that assists in discouraging fungus/candidiasis. Echinacea is another herb that can boost the immune system and discourage yeast/candidiasis infections.

Do I Need To Take Vitamins Or Other Types of Food Supplements In My Diet?

Vitamins A, C, E, and zinc are known as immunity boosters. You should consult your holistic health care provider before starting any supplement program. Although Vitamin C is an immune system booster, it is in many fruits that also contain a lot of sugar. To avoid the sugar, you may want to consume a Vitamin C supplement in your diet.

“Friendly bacteria” known as probiotics are very beneficial in the prevention of yeast/candidiasis infections. Lactobacillis acidophilus probiotic, breaks down milk sugars into byproducts that inhibit the growth of unwanted organisms. Lactobacillis acidophilus is found mainly in foods that are not recommended on a diet against yeast/candida infections: milk products and the soy food miso, which is made through a process of fermentation. In order to reap the benefits of probiotics without consuming milk or fermented products, you may choose to use a prepared probiotic product such as those found in health food stores. Consult your holistic health care provider to help you decide  the best course of action for your own health.

Can Food Choices Be Affected By Antibiotics?

Most antibiotics kill the beneficial bacteria that live in the intestine. Since these beneficial bacteria are part of our immune system, removing them will automatically drop a person’s immunity. For that reason, some holistic health care providers encourage their clients on antibiotics to include yogurt or a probiotic supplement containing acidophilus to prevent the onset of a yeast infection.

Green Tea Drinks Are Practically Worthless…

WATCH OUT! If you’re a health-conscious consumer you may not be getting what you pay for by drinking tea.

At the 240th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society (ACS) in Boston, reported on August 22, 2010 that many of the popular tea beverages on the market contain fewer polyphenols than one cup of Teabag-brewed green or black tea. Some contain such insignificant amounts that consumers would have to drink 20 bottles to get the “polyphenols” present in one cup of tea bag brewed tea.

People who drink tea are usually aware of the health benefits but unaware of the actual amounts of health nutrients, polyphenols. This research showed that most bottle tea beverages found that the polyphenol content is really low.

The authors pointed out that the bottled tea contained additional substances, including large amounts of sugar and this adds calories that the consumer may be trying to avoid. The study also measured the level of polyphenols, a collection of natural antioxidants linked to anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer and anti-diabetic properties. Half of them contained almost no antioxidants and the remainder had little positive health benefits.

People would have to drink bottle after bottle of these teas to receive health benefits. The author also said. “I was surprised at the low polyphenol content. I didn’t expect it to be at such a low level.”

The authors also found that some manufacturers list the amount of polyphenols on the bottle. However, the amounts are often incorrect, because there are no industry or government standards for measuring and listing the polyphenolic compounds in a given beverage.
