Cancer Prevention Program Using Diet, Nutrition and Stress Reduction

Cancer, one of the most prevalent killers in today’s society has many studies showing diet and nutrition can act a preventative measure against it.

Here are some solid diet and nutrition tips to increasing your chances of not getting cancer.

Diet:
What goes into our bodies affect us greatly. Increased vegetables and fiber intake, cutting down on red meat, decreasing alcohol consumption, increasing hydration by ingesting water and natural teas has been proven to increase our body’s immune system’s anti-cancer defenses.

Selenium: Ingestion of 200 mcg daily of this supplement has been shown to decrease some types of cancer.

Carotenes: Beta-carotenes prevent cellular damage with their anti-oxidant work in the body.

Essential Fatty Acids: Fish oils are essential in any cancer prevention protocol as it has strong anti-inflammatory properties.

Vitamin A: Daily intake of Vitamin A in the 6,000 IU range has been shown to increase immune system activity.

Vitamin C: One of nature’s most pristine and perfect anti-oxidants, Vitamin C increases immune function, and lowers histamine levels.

Stress Reduction: Stress decreases our body’s functioning in many ways. A high level of stress impairs the digestive processes, decreases immune function and depletes our energy reserves. Relaxation techniques such as yoga, deep breathing, biofeedback and many others can decrease stress levels.

New Jersey Holistic Medicine and Holistic Doctor Explains What It Is

Holistic medicine is a health care philosophy that treats the client as a whole person. Holistic medicine looks at an individual’s overall physical, mental, emotional well-being and the interrelationship each part has an one another. All these areas are assessed before recommending natural treatments that support the body.

A holistic doctor treats the symptoms of illness and disease and looks for the underlying root cause. Holistic medicine also attempts to prevent illness by placing a greater emphasis on optimizing health. The body’s organ systems are seen as interdependent parts of the body and the understanding that each part influences the others. The body’s natural state is one of health and an illness or disease is an imbalance in the body’s systems. Holistic therapies emphasize supporting the body through proper nutrition, lifestyle and avoidance of toxic substances, such as poor food and chemicals that pollute the body. The treatments used are noninvasive, safe and non-toxic.

There are no limits to the range of disorders and illnesses that can be treated in a holistic manner, as the principle of holistic healing is to balance the body, mind and emotions so the person can function at a higher level. When someone seeks a holistic doctor for a particular illness or disorder, other health problems improve without direct treatment. This improvement is because holistic medicine looks to re-balance the entire person, which is one of the goals of holistic medicine.

Many people are now turning to holistic medicine when suffering from chronic ailments that have not been successfully treated by conventional medicine. Although many good advances have been made in modern medicine, many disorders and illnesses don’t respond as well to treatments as holistic therapies. Holistic medicine is highly effective in treating chronic illnesses and maintaining health through proper nutrition and stress reduction. The field of holistic medicine does not rule out the practice of conventional medicine; the two can complement each other.

Many times the terms alternative medicine, complimentary medicine, natural medicine or preventative medicine are synonymous with holistic medicine, as each of these treatment philosophies centers on treating the whole person, rather than addressing a symptom, isolated condition or body part. Unfortunately, these terms are adopted by many health professionals and doctors to gain business who don’t employ a holistic approach.

Holistic medicine and doctors emphasize making changes in their lifestyle that promote and enhance health, empowering you through education.

The doctor and client will work together as a team to create the most effective treatment plan. This partnership between the client and holistic doctor is the cornerstone of holistic medicine.

A1 Nutrition Healthfood Store in Passaic Park, New Jersey

A-1 Nutrition is a “Gem” of a health food store located at 210 Main Avenue in Passaic Park, NJ. When you walk into the store it gives you that feeling of an old fashioned mom and pop store (which it is) where the owners June and Kevin Neblung and the super friendly staff are there to assist you.

With over 30 years in business this health food store offers hard to find products that your franchise health food stores don’t carry. Products like food grade hydrogen peroxide, a non-toxic anti-microbial, used to kill candida, funguses, bacteria and even some parasites. They also offer a wide range of natural health, wellness, and nutrition products including a full line of gluten free foods, kosher selections, homeopathic remedies, vegetarian, vegan items, and diet and sports nutrition products.

They have a great little juice bar where you can add protein powder, greens and honey to your nutrition filled beverage. A-1 nutrition also offers cleansing products for all of your organs, parasites, and candida along with a wide variety of fish oils, flax oil, probiotics, and a big selection of greens, reds, and wheat grass.

Half of the store is filled with fresh bread from The Baker, fresh vegan/vegetarian sandwiches, salads and all of the natural foods and beverages your body wants and needs.

A-1 nutrition carries a beauty section which includes: Aubrey Organics and Burt’s Bees and a complete line of natural hair color, natural cleansing supplies and a very nice book section with health and spiritual titles. Let me just say their book selection is one of the best I have seen in any health food or bookstore.

They also specialize in gluten free foods/supplements with new products coming in regularly. The choices range from bread all the way to licorice and they even sell organic produce.

A really great feature is that if they don’t carry a product you are looking for they can special order it for you. Now that is service you can’t beat.

If you’re looking for a fantastic health food store located in the heart of Passaic county, NJ check out A-1 Nutrition or visit their website www.a1nutritionstore.com.

Avoiding Depression Through Diet and Nutrition

What we eat not only affects us physically but also affects our moods and ability to handle stress. Our brain chemicals, known as neurotransmitters are closely linked with what we eat. The most common of these; dopamine, serotonin and norepinephrine are only working properly when we have adequate complex carbohydrate and protein consumption in our diets. It also important that we have proper absorption of our nutrients from our diet, so they can be put to good use

What To Avoid and Increase in Your Diet to Avoid Depression With Good Nutrition.

  • Sugar, avoiding both artificial and processed sweeteners.
  • Alcohol which is a depressant for your nervous system.
  • Caffeine and soft drinks which over stimulate our bodies and are loaded with sugar.
  • Fried, fatty, processed or refined foods and those high in saturated fats and hydrogenated oils. These foods are more or less empty calories, only benefiting in filling you and not feeding your brain with anything you need.
  • Increase good fats in your diet such as polyunsaturated and monounsaturated oils.
  • Eliminate food allergies by Isolating intolerances and sensitivies in your diet. This is a key factor to good neurotransmitter function. For instance, gluten-found in wheat products primarily has been linked to depressive disorders.
  • Increase lean protein consumption such as wild cold-water fish, legumes, nuts, seeds and fermented dairy products, like yogurt which help to balance your diet.
  • Increase whole grains, veggies and fruits aiming for ten servings daily. Fresh food is always preferred over canned.
  • Daily exercise which increases your heart-rate.  Even a moderate level daily is an absolute opponent to depression.

Battling Your Aging and Disease Process with Antioxidants Through Diet

Many holistic alternative health practitioners believe that the many toxins in today’s environment, added to our poor diets tip the oxidant/antioxidant balance against us. Oxidation creates free radicals which in turn create cell damage-our natural aging process-but we can retard this process with antioxidant supplements and a better diet. These measures allow us to tip the balance back in our favor, in effect slowing the ravages of our aging process.

The Cause

Our environment is a dangerous place; radiation, air pollution, first and second-hand smoke, anesthetics, fried and char-broiled foods, all these and more produce a large amount of free radicals. Free radicals are implicated in diseases and conditions like, heart disease, arthritis, lupus, cancer and other autoimmune diseases, plus in robbing us, over time, of the nutrients we need to keep our bodies working properly.

The Cure

Creating and utilizing antioxidant atoms and molecules quench free radicals and thwart the continuing process of oxidation. The body makes some antioxidants in the proteins it produces but many others are delivered to us from the food we eat and supplements we ingest. The most important of these and the foods where you can find them are:

Carotene

Broccoli, cantaloupe, carrots (and juice), fresh or dried apricots, mangoes and persimmons, leafy greens (spinach, kale, mustard, collard, swiss chard), pumpkin, winter squash, sweet potatoes, and tomato products.

Vitamin C

Blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, citrus fruits and juices (oranges and grapefruits), cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, kohlrabi cabbage), leafy greens (mustard, turnips, kale, collard), melons (especially cantaloupe) papaya, kiwi, mangoes, pineapple, guave, strawberries, red and green peppers, sweet potatoes, tomatoes and tomato juice.

Bioflavonoids

Apples, green tea, onions, cherries, blueberries, herbs (bilberry, hawthorne, chamomile, ginkgo, milk thistle), quercetin, and citrus (from the fleshy portion of the peel0, green pepper.

Vitamin E

Avocados, fish, and shellfish, leafy greens (fresh spinach, kale collard), mangoes, nuts, seeds, wheat germ, whole grain products, vegetables oils, egg yolk.

Selenium & Zinc

Cashews, eggs, garlic, halibut, oysters, salmon, tuna, scallops, oysters, crabmeat, cheese, beef roast, pumpkin seeds, dry roasted cashews, whole grains.

Hypnosis An Almight Weapon In Alternative & Complimentary Cancer Treatments

While not given the attention that more conventional cancer therapies have received, alternative and complementary treatments are very important when undergoing conventional therapies for cancer. People diagnosed with hard to treat cancers will often use the alternative therapies in conjunction with mainstream surgery, chemo, or radiation treatments to form a more comprehensive, mind-body, regimen. Among the most effective alternative treatments utilized by those diagnosed with cancer is hypnosis, also known as hypnosis.

Hypnosis has been used for many years in clinical practice. Effective cancer treatments and therapies often depend on the person’s ability to not only overcome the cancer through treatments but also to maintain their health and mental energies throughout the painful side effects of cancer treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiation.

Often, the symptoms and effects of the cancer on the person’s body are negligible compared to the side effects of chemotherapy and radiation treatments. This is where alternative and complimentary treatments such as hypnosis/hypnotherapy has been said to be most effective. Cancers, such as mesothelioma, which often can’t be removed by surgical interventions, are often treated with some combination of chemotherapy and radiation. While these powerful therapies can be effective in eliminating some of the tumor, they also affect the health of the surrounding tissues. Most people experience nausea and generalized pain that have been dramatically reduced through the utilization of hypnosis. Some specific hypnosis treatments utilized in controlling nausea and pain include altering the sensations of pain through the nervous system, controlling anxiety, and therapeutic imagery.

Hypnosis treatments may not be appropriate for everyone’s pain and individual symptoms but it’s certainly worth exploring as it can do no harm. The goal with alternative treatments, as with traditional treatments, is always to increase the effectiveness of therapies as a whole. If hypnosis can assist in any way in helping people recover or control side effects of chemotherapy or radiation, then it will compliment the treatment regimens overall efficacy and should certainly be utilized.

Summary Of Naturopathic Medicine (Naturopathy)

Introduction

Naturopathic medicine is a unique system of healing first developed in the late 1890’s in Europe which emphasizes the natural self-healing processes of the human body. The main principles include using healing approaches which derive from natural means, encouraging self-care and responsibility for health, using therapies that promote the body’s incredible ability to heal itself. The treatments take into account the entire person. A naturopathic doctor or more commonly known as a holistic doctor typically combines several kinds of holistic healing therapies, including nutrition and diet (one of my specialties), lifestyle changes, herbal medicines, supplementation, vitamins, minerals, hydrotherapy, mental health counseling, biofeedback and hypnosis all geared to prevent illness, treat disease, and promote wellness.

History of Naturopathy

Naturopathy derived as a commonly practiced holistic health system in the early 1900’s, and its origins are mainly from European herbal and water therapy traditions. It grew in popularity in the US until the 1940’s, then dropped in popularity during the ‘50’s and ‘60’s, and has since experienced a reemergence. It is estimated that up to 70% of Americans have tried some form of alternative, holistic, or complimentary medicine and annual visits to these types of practitioners exceeds visits to conventional medical doctors in the United States.

Philosophy of Naturopathy

Principles that are central to the practice of naturopathic/holistic medicine include:

  1. The healing power of nature. Naturopaths recognize the body’s inherent ability to heal itself, and the naturopathic physician’s role in promoting and enhancing self-healing.
  2. First do no harm. Naturopaths realize the importance of minimizing harmful side effects of treatment. Whenever possible choose gentler, less potent, therapeutic options.
  3. Find the root cause. This is by far one of the most important principles in naturopathy. Realizing that suppressing symptoms alone may get in the way of discovering the root cause of a disease.
  4. Doctor as teacher. The role of the naturopathic holistic doctor is to educate and encourage individuals to take responsibility for their own health and wellness.
  5. Treat the whole person. Naturopathic holistic doctors strive to take into account all aspects of their clients’ health including emotional, physical, and spiritual aspects.
  6. Prevention. Naturopathic holistic doctors realize the importance of disease prevention through the use of effective techniques such as diet, lifestyle changes, and herbs and supplements.

bitter melon extract battles breast cancer

According to results of a recent study published in the American Association for Cancer Research Journal, bitter melon extract was found to positively affect breast cancer cell growth.

“Our findings suggest that bitter melon extract modulates several signal transduction pathways, which induces breast cancer cell death,” said lead researcher Ratna B. Ray, Ph.D., professor in the Department of Pathology at Saint Louis University.

Rajesh Agarwal, Ph.D professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Colorado, Denver School of Pharmacy and editor of the study, also weighs in: “Breast cancer is a major killer among women around the world, and in that perspective, results from this study are quite significant. This study may provide us with one more agent as an extract that could be used against breast cancer if additional studies hold true.”

Of course, additional studies are needed to further understand the specific way bitter melon extract affects cancer cells. Dr. Agarwal and his colleagues err on the side of cautious optimism, knowing that further studies will need to establish the validity of the bitter melon results.

Bitter melon extract is cultivated in Asia, Africa and South America and the extract is commonly used in folk medicines as a remedy for diabetes in India, China and Central America.

My personal opinion is that I wouldn’t purchase bitter melon just yet. There has been more and better studies on other substances that I would prefer to treat breast cancer such as green tea extract, proteolytic enzymes, and maitake mushrooms to name a few.

Blueberries Improve Inflammatory Bowel Disorders (IBS, Chron's Colitis)

New research from the Lund University Faculty of Engineering shows that blueberries are not only rich in antioxidants and vitamins, but can alleviate and protect against intestinal inflammations.

The Swedish study published in the Journal of Microbiology began as an attempt to see whether various types of dietary fiber and health-promoting bacteria-‘probiotic’ bacteria such as lactobacillus and bifidobacteria-could help alleviate/prevent the risk of stomach ailments such as ulcerative colitis and colorectal cancer.

Blueberries are rich in polyphenols, which have an antimicrobial and antioxidative effect. The combination of blueberries and probiotics reduced inflammation inducing bacteria in the intestine at the same time as the number of health promoting lactobacilli increased.

The study also noted that when blueberries were eaten with probiotics, the content of butyric acid and propionic acid increased in the blood. These two substances are known to be important energy sources for intestinal cells, but more recently recognized to favorably impact immune defense.

The most striking result, however, was that blueberries themselves had such a favorable effect, even more so then the other substances tested with them, like rye bran and oat bran. In combination with good probiotics, blueberries ruled the day!

New Jersey Didn't Make The List Of 100 Worst Cities For Asthma-See Who Did

The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America ranked the worst cities with asthma according to factors such as annual pollen scores, pollution levels, public smoking laws, poverty rates, the percentage of people without health insurance, and state laws ensuring student access to emergency inhalers to use in asthma episodes. The researchers also looked at the number of states that have the most antismoking laws, forbidding smoking in bars, restaurants, workplaces, and in some states, cars in which minors are riding.
